Bansko has become a very popular destination for ski–ing holidays in the winter, and hiking and other outdoor pursuits in the spring and summer. The resort features regularly in ski magazines and in the sales literature of both UK and overseas tour operators. The multitude of new bars, restaurants and cafes appeal to Western European holiday makers and tourists. With the resorts growing popularity comes an increasingly strong demand for rental accommodation and hotels, especially in peak season when property owners can command premium price rentals.
Bansko offers the best and most modern ski centre of all Bulgarian ski resorts. Bansko also holds the best snow record and the longest ski season of all Bulgarian ski resorts, running from 15 December through to 15 May. The last few years have seen a massive investment process with new hotels and resort facilities being under construction. A brand new resort areas with luxury hotels and holiday apartments are being developed opposite the Gondola and in and around the area.
The town of Bansko is situated nearby the river Glazane at the north-east foot of Pirin, overlooked by the highest and most beautiful part of the mountains. Located just 160 kilometres from Sofia and 6 kilometres from Razlog, Bansko has developed into a favourite ski & snowboard destination, thanks to the excellent ski facilities combined with the unique architecture and historical significance.
Bansko is seated 925 metres above sea level, above which at between 2000-2600 metres is its primary skiing area. The highest peak in this characteristically Alpine area is Vihren which reaches to 2914 metres.
Ski pistes are sited in two main centres: Challin Valog (1100-1600metres) and Shiligarnika (1700-2500metres). They are on the northern slopes of Pirin, and easily accessed by the new Gondola lift which starts from Bansko and stretched over the pistes for 65 kilometres. Some 44 Technoalpine snow cannons nest the slopes and contribute to an extended ski season. The lengthy ski season is also guaranteed by a fleet of Kassbohrer slope maintenance vehicles.
