About Bourgas
Bourgas Region
Bourgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria, situated in the south-eastern part of the country.
It spreads on four terraces near the Bourgas creek. Bourgas is a town without running rivers. The surrounding lakes take in water from the rivers Aitoska, Russokastrenska, Sredetska and Fakiiska. Port Bourgas is the biggest Bulgarian sea port.
Like Varna, Bourgas has an expansive seaside park, popular central pedestrian promenade and distinctive turn-of-the-century architecture.
The City History Museum provides an interesting view of turn-of-the-century Bourgas. Perhaps the best museum is the Natural Science Museum which offers well presented exhibits of flora, fauna, and minerals from around the Bourgas region.
The seaside maritime park hosts shrub-filled gardens, memorials and modern sculptural works extending northward from the city center to the salt-pan shores of Lake Atanasovsko. A stroll through the 7 km park reveals the heart of Bourgas, graced with lively sidewalk cafes, restaurants, bars, or snack food outlets which line the connecting pedestrian promenades of Bogoridi and Alexandrovska streets.
Dubbed as the "City of Talents" due to the large number of prominent artists and musicians who hail from the region, Bourgas boasts an active artistic and cultural life. Among its public institutions are drama, opera, ballet, and puppet theatre companies; a symphony orchestra; and a host of museums and galleries. During the summer, the 2500-seat open air theatre located in the seaside park offers both operatic and pop music concerts, international folksong and dance performances, and a wealth of other productions.
Albeit that there are a few beaches in Bourgas, it is not famous as a beach resort. However it is positioned well as a bridge between the large resorts to the north such as Sunny Beach, Nessebar, and Sozopol, and the smaller, quieter coastal towns that lie to the south.
