About Kavarna
Dobrich Region
Kavarna is a small port town in the centre of the Dobrudzha coastline of the Black Sea. The town itself is an exceptionally clean and welcoming place which has preserved its authentic appearance despite today's resort hysteria.
The remains of Roman villas and walls, medieval buildings and churches nest on the high hill of Chirakman. Old buildings dating back to the Ottoman era, as well as remains from Greek and Roman times, are also preserved. The town museum hosts interesting exhibits of Kavarna's history, including an impressive Thracian collection, and also an Art Gallery and an Archaeological Museum.
Kavarna is situated 12 km away from Cape Kaliakra, the most northerly point of Bulgaria. Kaliakra is famous for a romantic legend entailing forty ‘maidens’ committing suicide in the name of Christianity. This is also the location of an ancient fortress called Tirisis, which according to legends was used to guard the treasures of Lyzimah, successor of Alexander the Great. It is also famous for its caves that once served as the habitat of the rare Black Sea Monk Seal.
It has a unique natural potential which is crucial for its local-economic aspect and development prospects. A large part of the territory (over 75%) is occupied by fertile arable land. The picturesque coastline of Kavarna is 42 km.
Kavarna is an important agricultural centre and forms an integral part of the Northern wine growing region of Bulgaria. The region enjoys long, warm autumns which ripen the fruit to full maturity, retaining good levels of acidity, producing dry and semi-dry whites notable for their fruitiness and freshness. Sparkling wines also come from this sub-region.
Kavarna is also a developing resort with great potential, and is becoming an attractive tourist site for golf-lovers. This is due to the current construction of two new golf courses. One is sited between Kavarna and Balchik, on a plateau overlooking the sea. The other is situated along the coastline, near the sea, below the villages of Bozhurets and Topola, 3 km away from Kavarna.
